Program details
Green Waste Management
Helping residents remove green waste to reduce fuel loads and maintain defensible space.
Overview
Green Waste Management reduces dangerous fuel buildup while giving residents practical ways to handle organic waste. The program keeps neighborhoods cleaner, safer, and more fire resilient by making green waste removal accessible and reliable.

What we remove from the land should never become tomorrow’s danger.
Unmanaged yard debris can quietly accumulate into wildfire fuel and environmental risk. This program creates accessible disposal pathways that prevent organic waste from becoming a hazard. Community green waste bins and pickup services help residents maintain defensible space while keeping excess material out of unmanaged piles.
Collected green waste is redirected into local agricultural reuse whenever possible, extending the life of organic material instead of treating it as trash. By keeping waste in circulation and out of hazardous buildup zones, the program reduces fire risk while supporting a practical, community-centered cycle of reuse.

Key Activities
Free green waste bins for Kula residents
We provide green waste bins for the Kula community to use, free of charge.

Community green waste bins provide residents with accessible disposal options for yard debris and organic material that would otherwise contribute to fire fuel buildup. By centralizing collection, the program reduces unmanaged waste accumulation while keeping neighborhoods safer and cleaner. Collected material is redirected into local agricultural reuse whenever possible, extending the life of organic waste instead of treating it as trash.
The program transforms excess organic waste into a resource while reinforcing responsible community-scale waste handling.
This activity contributes to:

Invasive vegetation removal reduces fire fuel loads while improving the long-term health and safety of the landscape. Field crews remove hazardous or non-native plant growth from residential areas, public land, and priority sites identified in coordination with community partners.
This work helps protect homes and infrastructure while creating safer defensible space and supporting long-term vegetation management goals. Removed material is directed into appropriate processing streams whenever possible, ensuring that hazard reduction contributes to responsible material handling rather than waste accumulation.

Kūpuna Green Waste Pickup
If you’re 65+ years old, we will pickup green waste at your property. Please note that the green waste must be processed and ready for pickup before we arrive.

Kūpuna green waste pickup provides direct support to elderly residents who may not have the mobility, equipment, or resources to manage yard debris safely. Crews collect green waste from qualifying households to reduce fire fuel buildup and help maintain defensible space around homes.
This service prioritizes community members who face physical or logistical barriers to disposal, ensuring that fire safety is not limited by age or access. By assisting kūpuna residents, the program reinforces a commitment to equity while reducing neighborhood-wide risk.

Volunteer With Us
Volunteers are an integral part of Mālama Kula’s history and operations. Join us in making Kula safer and more resilient.

Volunteer field support enables ongoing participation outside scheduled events by integrating volunteers into day-to-day operations. Individuals assist crews with active projects, extending the organization’s capacity to address hazards and restoration needs.
This flexible participation model allows community members to contribute skills, time, and labor in ways that match operational priorities. Volunteer support remains a foundational element of the organization’s field presence and impact.
